Double Indemnity Frame Analysis

       In this frame, my attention is first directed to Barton Keyes, making him the focal point. He is the focal point of the shot because he is the closest to the camera out of the three characters, making him the largest and he is aligned with one of the vertical line of thirds. Next, I’m directed to Walter Neff because Keyes’ sight line is clearly dissected towards him, and there are leading line shadows cast onto the wall that connect Barton to Walter. Although less obvious than the sight line between Keyes and Neff, Walter’s sightline is directed towards Mr. Jackson because Mr. Jackson is a very dangerous character for Walter, he is the only one that has the slightest idea that Walter was involved in the death of Mr. Dietrichson. Leading lines created using Venetian blinds further aid our eyes to travel from Walter to Mr. Jackson. The final sightline is from Mr. Jackson back to Keyes, creating a triangle of sight lines between the three characters. Although Mr....

  In this frame, Spielberg is attempting to give the reader and idea of John Anderton’s state at this point in the film. He compares the inescapable fact that he is running out of oxygen in the tub and will need to come up for air which will get him caught by the spider bots with the new reality that John is a criminal and will “inevitably” kill Leo Crow as the Precrime department closes in on him. To begin by applying the rule of thirds, John Anderton’s blindfolded head and the spider bot are positioned at corners of the grid to draw our attention. John is hiding under the frigid water as the spider bot searches for him. Inevitably, John will have to come up for air and the bot will find him just as he will “inevitably” kill a stranger according to the precog’s vision.  The bright streak of light coming from under the door stand out against the otherwise dark bathrooom and bring further attention to John’s head, as it is pointed in that direction.
